THE TRAINING FACILITY FOR NAVY OFFICERS

The Naval Academy, located in the district of Mürwik in Flensburg, was built in the northern-German brick-Gothic style. Since 1910, it has been the main training facility for the officers in the German Navy. With over 200 metres of waterfront and an approximately 60-metre-high tower, the Academy dominates the southern shore of the Flensburg Firth. It is about a 10 minute drive away from the centre of Flensburg down Mürwiker Straße. The military history collection is housed in the former commanders’ quarters on the Academy’s grounds. It tells the history of the German Navy from 1848 to present day. This small museum is currently closed due to the renovation of the façade.

Insider tip: The Military History Training Centre (Wehrgeschichtliche Ausbildungszentrum, or WGAZ) opens its doors to visitors every Tuesday at 2 pm (except for holidays). The museum can be reached via Kelmstraße if you are coming from the inland Admission to the museum is free. Please remember to bring a valid ID.
